this is the city.  washington, dc. named after our first president, george washington,  it's the country's capitol and seat of government power. a lot of people live and work in dc.  some are famous movers and shakers. others are anonymous cogs in the bureaucrat machine.   the majority are honest, hard-working citizens.  mixed among them are others willing to go to any length to get what they want...senators, members of congress, appointees, political consul...

paul o'neill--former bush administration secretary of the treasury--is an interesting guy  who's proposing an intriguing alternative to social security as we know it.  instead of trying to fix the existing program by throwing trillions of dollars at it with no guarantee of success, o'neill suggests we create a savings account for every us citizen--funding it with an initial deposit of $2000 on the date of birth.  an additional $2000 would be added on each subsequent birthday t...

"No amount of money can truly compensate these brave men and women for the suffering that they went through at the hands of this very brutal regime and at the hands of Saddam Hussein." White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan November 2003. no amount of money is exactly what the 17 american pilots--who were tortured in abu gharib prison by saddam hussein's thugs after being captured and  held as pows during the first gulf war--are gonna get if the bush administration has its way. t...

during a nightline televised 'town hall meeting' just before the iraqi election, senator george allen (r) va reasserted a proposition he's been advocating since april, 2004 after being inspired by an ny times op-ed piece suggesting iraqi oil profits be divided amongst and distributed to every resident-citizen of iraq.  although no specific plan has been developed, the idea would use the alaska permanent fund as a rough model.  after using the original contract payment to improve the ...

“By every test we have...this is as surely a liberal epoch as the late 19th Century was a conservative one.”-- presidential scholar James MacGregor Burns "He has wrecked his party for a long time to come and is not even likely to control the wreckage." -- James Reston, New York Times the quotes above refer to the presidential election of 1964  in which republican candidate, barry goldwater,  and his party were crushed by lydon b. johnson and the democrats.  only 40...

sorry bout luring you in with the u/c headline...as well as for its somewhat misleading message.  while the pix below portray deepsea creatures that very well may evidence evolution in process, what i'm about to reveal is the story of this article--which was gonna be about strange deepsea creatures that washed ashore as the result of the tsunami--and how it evolved when i discovered my inspiration was actually a hoax.   but first...some pix! this lil guy is a vampire squ...

one of the basic requirements of torture is that the person being tortured has to remain alive.  presumably the dead dont feel pain. judging from that big ol grin on sabrina harmon's face, she musta skipped the class in which that was discussed. perhaps i'm naive or want to put too much faith in or give too much credit to my fellow citizens because i really don't think this woman engaged in desecrating the dead prior to finding herself in a situation where she was...

with all the money, clothing, food, etc. donations that have already been sent to help victims of the tsunami, i doubt very much a couple thou would make much difference there.  on the other hand, it could have a hell of an effect on my life if donated to equally worthy causes. the first causes that come to mind would be  us supreme court justices scalia and thomas--one of whom is very likely going to replace chief justice rehnquist. neither is likely to object (pun intended...

one of my sisters has had 3 rhodesian ridgebacks (also known as a 'lion hounds', because they were bred to hunt lions in south africa).  as noble and mighty as they may appear--and they are beautiful, big dogs--they have a tendency to be goofs when not on the veldt.  just before one holiday dinner, someone foolishly placed a very large ham a little too close to the edge of the table.  the dog was innocently hanging around underfoot when the inevitable happened. the h...

on tuesday, 12/14/04, president george 'curley' bush bestowed america's highest civilian award on former cia director george 'moe' tenet, former coalition authority adminstrator paul 'larry' bremer and retired general tommy franks (who, as you can see, did his best to keep his face hidden). "this honor goes to three men who have played pivotal roles in great events and whose efforts have made our country more secure and advanced the cause of human liberty," bush said. according ...

"And if I were a soldier overseas wanting to defend my country, I'd want to ask the Secretary of Defense the same question, and that is, are we getting the best we can get us?" --George W. Bush 12/9/2004 chances are, he aint gonna be a soldier for at least the next 4 years. since he is, and was, the president who decided to send solders overseas to defend our country a little less than 2 years ago, im hoping--but not terribly confident based on the way things worked out--he did ask the sec...
