tv don't get much more interesting (and possibly even entertaining/informative) than this folks. thanks to an odd coupling of the sundance network and court tv (and here i thought it was only good as an insomnia cure) in the public interest, four first amendment project films will be aired on both networks...2 tonite and 2 next tuesday nite. sundance is a premium cable channel here but court tv is--to the best of my knowledge--included with most cable packages at no extra charge.
the times ive indicated are most likely only applicable to viewers in the central standard zone (i got em from a site run by a texas publication). so be sure to check your own local listings.
here's tonite's lineup:
- "fox vs. franken" (d: chris hegedus and nick doob): focuses on fox network's attempt to to block publication of al franken's satirical book ' lies and the lying liars who tell them: a fair and balanced look at the right'. dec. 7 at 8pm on the sundance channel, 9pm on court tv.
- "poetic license" (d: mario van peebles): former nj state poet laureate, amiri baraka, whose position was eliminated as a result of the controversy over his poem about 9/11. while reading the poem, a number of journalists, scholars, and artists comment on it, the role of artists and the challenges to free expression complicated by public funding.. airs dec. 7 at 8:30pm on sundance, 9:30pm on court tv.
next tuesday nite's lineup:
- "some assembly required" (d: john walter): everyone's favorite cheesy director's film about this summers republican convention in nyc deals with the conflict between security and first amendment protection of free speech and public assembly. airs dec. 14 at 8pm on sundance, 9pm on court tv.
- "no joking" (d: bob balaban): features previously unseen footage (a rare treat and a must-see for anyone who is at all interested in the first amendment and/or the history of modern standup comedy) with eric bogosian and richard dreyfuss discussing free speech. airs dec. 14 at 8:30pm on sundance, 9:30pm on court tv.
i found out about these screenings thanks to another blogger (whom i'd love to credit but i cant recall his/her name nor the article title). i believe at least 2 of yall--lil whip and gene nash--will wanna see at least one of these films.
the blurbs are summaries of descriptions by whomever reviewed them for the site on which i located details bout the broadcasts (which would be theaustinchronicles.com; here's a link: Link ).
i'm goin for the four-pack.
one more thing. i gotta split in a few (its like 12:30 pst at the moment) and wont be back for about 6 hours. so if anyone feels this is as worthwhile as i do and wouldnt mind bumpin it should that be required, ill nominate ya for a patrick henry award or somethin (hopefully there is one). and please dont break into my place while im out.
