Ours, That Is

to: all supporters of our  president's counter-revolutionary determination to assume to his office and himself monarchist powers against which--and from which to free us forever--this nation's founders fought and died.

re:  the absurd incongruity of officially abrogating all relations with terrorist state syria while simultaneously utilizing syria as a backchannel instrument with which to perpetrate our own brand of state terrorism.

syrian-born canadian citizen maher arar--currently most visible, officially least justifiable yet highly unlikely to be the last victim of bush-cheney-gonzales 'we're the good people so you can trust us' benevolent despotism--has been totally vetted and found blameless by an official canadian commission of inquiry after two years of investigation.   here's a link to the commission website http://www.ararcommission.ca/eng/26.htm  and here's one to the commissioner's report--analysis and recommendations in pdf format: http://www.ararcommission.ca/eng/AR_English.pdf

among other commission findings is one worthy of serious scrutiny and consideration.  american authorities deliberately violated provisions of the vienna convention on consular relations requring governments to inform foreign nationals of their right to communicate with their home country's consul and to facilitate such contact.

forget, for a moment, this administration's willingness to jeopardize our troops by dismantling the geneva conventions and ask yourself whether you want someday to find yourself, your family or your friends on foreign soil and at the mercy of some reptilian gonzales' counterpart operating at his own discretion and without oversight.

to help you appreciate what you might experience in that case, according to gonzales, mr arar's trip to hell wasn't an 'extraordinary rendition.'     i guess he applies that qualifier only when we rendite bonafide terrorists to their country of national origin.

sorta like tossing brer rabbit into the briar patch.

it's a good article kingbee. i've been following the story closely in the canadian press and, being canadian am quite upset at my government's involvement in this man's plight.

the only aspect of the entire ordeal that i find remotely positive is seeing western democracy working, albeit a bit late. the arar commission is a good example of the process finding the wrong and trying to do everything posssible to right it. i don't think the same thing can be said of contries like syria. how many other maher arar's are sitting in syrian (and other) jail cells subjected to daily torture, all because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. you won't see commissions aimed at finding the truth in syria. you won't see syria trying to right the wrong. my guess is they're indifferent to the truth and to justice.

p.s. if y'all want to get noticed nowadays on ju you need to spruce up your titles. something referring to atrocities committed on animals or babies will get you a lot more mouse clicks.

if i were canadian, i might be able to find something positive here (other than the fact arar is back home and, yes, my government--if i were canadian--seems to be focused on doing the right thing).

i don't think the same thing can be said of contries like syria. how many other maher arar's are sitting in syrian (and other) jail cells subjected to daily torture, all because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. you won't see commissions aimed at finding the truth in syria. you won't see syria trying to right the wrong. my guess is they're indifferent to the truth and to justice.

after reading the above, first thing that struck me (and continues to do so, a lil more painfully every time i reread it) was this: replacing every instance of the word 'syria' with 'the usa' and doesn't cause any of those four sentences to be even a lil bit less accurate.

here's a sampling of what us attorney general gonzales had to say about the injustice done to arar:

"Mr. Arar was deported under our immigration laws. He was initially detained because his name appeared on terrorist lists, and he was deported according to our laws."

it appears as if gonzales is not only trying to deny it happened at all but, if it did, the us is responsible for any wrongdoing.

"Even if it were a rendition, we understand as a government what our obligations are with respect to anyone who is rendered by this government to another country, and that is that we seek to satisfy ourselves that they will not be tortured, and we do that in every case. And if in fact he had been rendered to Syria, we would have sought those same kind of assurances, as we do in every case."

if countries were corporations, i'm convinced syrian headhunters would be falling all over themselves trying to steal gonzales from the us.

i'll admit to having a chronic inability to see the obvious. now that you've shown me the way, you can bet i'm gonna do exactly as you suggest.

i suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility altho i haven't seen anything in my logs that seems connected. that redirection thing doesn't seem to happen randomly and i only see it happening when i access certain articles and blogsites (one of which is mine   ) perhaps someone could close this page, open a new window, go to my main blogsite page here WWW Link while watching what's goin on in his or her browser's status bar. i'll try to recall where else i've seen it.

your page comes up when I look at it. There doesn't seem to be any redirects.
