aids/hiv was initially characterized as the 'gay disease'.

as such, it inspired a lot of fear and hatred, not much sympathy and scores of cruel, smutty jokes before it became obvious that the general public was also susceptible.

it's currently estimated that at least half those infected with hiv or living with aids are women and that percentage is consistently increasing.  in some areas of the world (subsaharan africa and india), the rate of infection among women is 60%.   worldwide, a woman's likelihood of of being infected with hiv is 1.6 times than of men.

obviously women aren't infecting themselves.  nor is it likely they're contracting the infection from exclusively gay men. 

sadly i don't hold a lotta hope the shift in victim demographics will do much to change the attitudes of  those who've opposed efforts to control the epidemic through any method other than abstinence...those who are against distributing condoms...nor those who are currently holding back billions in loudly proclaimed allocated funding unless used to purchase branded pharmaceuticals, rather than less expensive generics. 

to them, gay men are useless or worse..  women are, at best, expendable.  and no real men--least of all their righteous selves--are bisexual
