far be it from me to suggest dark forces in the administration stepped over the line anticipation of a deep drop in presidential popularity, indictments and investigations, a series of catastrophic natural disasters during which there seemed to be an apparent lack of hands on the wheel still one needn't study very closely or even blur one's eyes more than a little bit to see the subtle connections: an innocent move to push medicare recipients into the wings of private insurers...an ungardene...

as new orleans sank beneath the flood, the rest of the world was deluged with tales of wholesale mayhem perpetrated by and upon those too old, too young, too sick, too scared, too venal, too stupid, too bloodthirsty, too angry, too poor or too subhuman to get outta the place before they found themselves swimming in a stinking stew of shit and decomposing bodies. the streets were full of thugs, armed with stolen weapons, attempting to blast rescue choppers outta the skies...willing ...

either i had a whole lotta incompetent or unscrupulous connections, ridiculously low quality standards (not to mention an even more ridiculously low  tolerance for psychotropics and euphorics) or i musta  fell in with really bad company who had even worse dope.  for whatever reason--but surely not for lack of trying--something went woefully wrong.  unlike all those stereotypical 60s survivors about whom it's claimed  (when they're not making the claim themselves)...

some of yall may remember my previous report on the one, the only  turkmenbashi (father of turkmens)  saparmurat niyazov and his plans to build an ice city in the midst of one of the world's hottest deserts.   Link sadly, it appears as if that plan has been put on the back ummm freezer for the time being. there is good news tho. amazing tho it may seem, it has nothing to do with geico.  earlier this month, niyazov arranged to have part one of the most popul...

from the first time i heard them on record, i've always liked the rolling stones. sometimes i've liked them way more than others.  their first four albums ('the rolling stones england's newest hitmakers', '12 x 5',  'out of our heads' & 'rolling stones now') contain cuts that are truly masterpieces of the genre.   but even when they were caught up in the silliness of trying to out-sergeant pepper the beatles as  'their satanic majesties' or th...

by simply muttering a simple word on cnn's 'inside politics'--ironically, the same word most often used to describe his writing--columnist robert novak outted himself indefinitely from his job at cnn.  novak and fellow guest james carville were interupting each other during a discussion about florida congresswoman katherine harris' (r-fl) upcoming campaign for the us senate.  rep harris, who came to national attention during the 2000 presidential election debacle, is considered by ...

asserting the naval base at guantanamo, cuba isn't legally 'american soil' is such an outrageous reversal of realty  it aint difficult for me to imagine those who first conceived the scam buying into it themselves.  thing is, you can hire wolfgang puck to make a pie outta mooseshit and, a great chef like puck may be able to whip  up something that looks and smells just like boysenberry.   sooner or later, though, all but your most gullible guests are gonna realize yo...

is there anything more evocative of the  good old  summertime--the kinda summers we used to have back before everything went to hell--than a good old cream truck rolling slowly along  the street, it's cheery nursery rhyme melodies and jingling bells calling kids of all ages forth from their yards and houses?    judging from events being reported in papers throughout the country and as far away as rural india, the good humored vendor of yore is disappearing faste...

i lost my copy of your autobiography--"Will"--about 10 years ago, so you're gonna have to bear with my paraphrasing.  i was very much struck by several of your revelations. for example, you described being present at a meeting with some under-assistant something or other to turkey during a time when nixon was determined to pressure the turkish government into halting the production of opium as part of his 'war on drugs'.  whoever the guy was and whatever his position mighta be...

gary lynn sterling is a self-confessed murderer who was, until last wednesday, scheduled to be executed by the state of texas on may 25, 2005.  in 1989, after he was arrested in connection with the murder of two elderly brothers, sterling volunteered to help clear up another case and led authorities to a location at which two bodies were found.  he was subsequently charged with one of those murders (no prosecution was initiated for the other for which sterling is the chief suspect), convicte...

the old joke about how to stop fish from smelling (cut off their noses, course) may be taking on new dimensions of meaning and import.  dr. charles wysocki of the monell chemical senses centre in philadelphia believes he has found more evidence that human sexual orientation is genetically determined.  dr wisocki has published in the journal Psychological Science results of scientific tests he performed while investigating the importance of body odor as a sexual attractant.  the...

although this may appear to be a response to gideon's declaration of independence from euphemism Link , it's actually something i've been meaning to do for a while, and owes its inspiration more to a recent flurry of rants, screeds and harangues by some strident self-proclaimed voices of the sorely oppressed majority. as strange as this may seem, i feel a strong connection to--if not an actual bond with--of all people, moses. i'm almost positive i know now how he felt upon se...

okay the title is misleading.  george said hey abdullah, it's time we were frank & earnest with each other.  abdullah agreed but 'only if i get to be ernest this time.' is this just a shameless ploy to get the crown prince to give him another $130,000 in jewelry...or a clue as to why that same sex marriage amendment seems to have slipped between the cracks?
